This was a year of changes – the final season for the Indians as  Hardin College, the last in the Texas Conference and the finale for head coach “Red” Rutledge. Cecil McClung was named the first assistant basketball coach ever on the campus.

The Indians again found it tough going in the strong Texas Conference. They suffered 17 losses in 24 contests. After losing eight games in a row, the Tribe won their first game of the season by whipping Oklahoma Baptist College 38-34 in overtime. Hardin College scored 1,063 points to 1,278 for the opponents. Don Robbins led the Tribe’s scoring with a 9.1 per game average and was selected to the all-conference team.

The 1946-47 season began with a new era on the campus. Hardin Junior College became known as Hardin College with the establishment of the junior and senior classes and offering a bachelor degree program for the first time.
